Undercover Ultra: July 2022
Our man on the inside reports on what happened on the Curva so far this summer.
Our man in the Curva is back with a round up of all the latest stories involving Italy’s various Ultra groups. We keep his identity out of these articles, but his passion and insight shines through.
Was that a threat?
AC Milan won the title for the first time in eleven years and the fans went literally crazy. More than a million people stormed the streets of Milan to celebrate with the players, and thousands who couldn’t attend went loud on social media. The last game of the season was a first for the Serie A as the Mapei Stadium – a ground with a capacity of around 21,000 – was packed with almost 19,000 away supporters with many more forced to stay outside.
Before the match, the Sassuolo Ultras released a statement that looked like a real threat:
On Sunday, any Milan fan who enters the stadium with bad intentions will be seen as an "enemy" and consequently treated as such. To the occasional fans who will be there; stay at home as you always have! Furthermore, all those Sassuolo fans who have decided to put their season tickets up for auction and make profit from this match will no longer be welcome, wherever we play.”
But the Sassuolo end was still full of Milan fans. There were only a few hundred home fans who stood there, watching. No one was hurt, no punches were thrown, nothing at all. The Sassuolo ultras did nothing but look on as Milan fans enjoyed their time and celebrated the Scudetto.
So, why release such a big statement that looked like a real threat, especially for the younger fans who attended the match to watch their team win the title?
Antonio, you will always be remembered!
After victory in the UEFA Conference League, Roma fans shared their joy after more than 10 years of silence and no trophies. But even in these moments, when everyone is cheering, we shouldn’t forget about those who are not here with us anymore.
This was the same thought that the club’s ultras had as they decided to dedicate a fresh new mural to Antonio De Falchi, the Roma fan who died after an attack by Milan fans prior to the match against the Rossoneri.
The mural, which was made to remember Antonio on the day of his death, shows De Falchi with the Conference League trophy in his hands and with an inscription: “Your face is immortal, Antonio, we like to remember you in this way… your Ultras.”
A touching gesture, for the Roma fans in general and for the people of Tor Bella Monaca, the neighborhood where Antonio De Falchi was born and raised.
